The School of Nursing launched a Nurse Advocacy Forum for nursing alums and senior baccalaureate students on April 30, 2008. The purpose of this forum is to provide mentoring support and networking opportunities among alums who are “novice” nurses, students, and faculty. In attendance were 8 alums, 4 seniors, Dean Mimi Donius, and two faculty conveners, Professors Connie Vance and Deborah Hunt.
New nurses face many challenges in the hospital setting due to the high acuity of patients, nursing staff shortages, and limited hospital resources. This Forum provides a vehicle for support, advocacy, networking, creative problem solving, leadership development, and data that could assist educators and clinical staff.
Future plans include support meetings, email communication, journaling, and data collection.
